Summer Learning Journey - Celebrating Summer - Week 3 Day 2 - Ultraviolet

Welcome back to another post! Today's task is about science and safe with the UV Levels in summer. Sometimes you need to stay inside because of the weather and how it's really hot in Summer. We had to make our own UV Indicator and a UV Wearable.

Here is the UV Indicator:

And the UV Wearable:

Here are some images of the Indicator I created:

I had a lot of fun creating these wearable's and indicators.

Hope you had an awesome day!!

Happy New Year!

  1. Kia Ora Maddison,

My name is Zana and I am a blog commenter from the Summer Learning Journey.

This activity is awesome as it spreads awareness of how bad UV rays can be and how important it is to keep sun safe and sun smart by wearing sunscreen, wearing your hat and keeping in the shade.

Your UV indicator looks great, it is clear to read and understand with the color coding and labels and adding the moveable peg is a great idea to manually change the chart, I think it's quite similar to the signs you see beside the road that show the weather and water restrictions.

It is great to see that you did the step up activity too and I think your device you have designed is great, having it in a watch like form is easy to wear and read, and being on your wrist it will be able to detect the UV well. It could also be used as a reminder when to apply sunscreen.

Happy Holidays, Keep up the great work and I hope to see more of your posts over the summer.

    Ngā mihi nui,

    1. Afternoon Zana,
What a great idea to build in a sunscreen reminder into my UV wristband. Thank you for your comments,

  2. Kia ora Maddison. I love the effort you've put into these designs. I like how you have a digital version as well as one you've made and hung up. How do you wear your wearable UV indicator? I would guess around the wrist?

  4. Morena Maddison,

I was really impressed with your creativity on this activity. You thought about what we had around the house to create your UV indicator. You also placed it in an area of the house that everyone can easily access and see. You made it very clear and easy to use.
I really liked your idea of a bracelet type design for a uv device you could wear. Does it have an alert system if the uv level changed and it could alert you so you could change what you are doing and add layers of protection if needed?

    Awesome work

    1. Afternoon Mum,
I really enjoy the activities where I have to create something. I like coming up with new ideas. No I hadn't thought about an alert system. Maybe that is something I could add into it. Thanks for the idea.

  5. Morena Maddison,

This is a great Blog with lots of really important information.
I am a doctor at Starship Hospital so sometimes see children (and grownups) who have forgotten to check about the UV levels, and stay outside for a long time without protection, and get REALLY, REALLY sunburnt. It hurts a lot! And causes wrinkly skin when you are older.
Much better to check the UV levels like you say in your Blog.

    Slip. slop, slap and scan!

Wow, how exciting to have a real doctor replying to my blog. How long have you been working at Starship hospital. Yes my parents are very good at making sure we are covered, wearing hats and always putting on sunscreen.
Thanks for you checking out my blog
